AUSSIE DARREN ROWLAND CAUSES UPSET NUMBER FOUR

Making his debut in the Ambassador Cruise LineWorld Indoor Bowls Open Singles Championships Potters Resorts Australian qualifier Darren Rowland from Maylands in the Western Perth area, became the fourth player to knock out one of the top sixteen seeds in the first round of the Championships.

His victim was another former holder of this World Open Singles title and was World Number 1 in 2006 - namely Greg Harlow seeded 15 who joins past winners Jamie Walker, Mervyn King and Nicky Brett on the sidelines.

Harlow got off to a comfortable start, counting singles on the opening ends but then it all went wrong and be lost the first set 9-2.

He made amends for losing a single on the first end of the second set, rolling in ten shots over the next five ends for the loss of just two singles to win 10-3 with an end spare.

And what an epic tie break decider it was. Harlow took first blood, Rowland the second.

On the defining end Harlow held shot with his first bowl, then Rowland beat it with his second for a match lie. With his second, third and fourth bowls Harlow nominated to kill the end. He missed twice but with his last bowl, cracked the jack deep into the right hand corner of the rink, which the umpire's measure judged that the jack was counted within the confines of the rink and as Rowland had the nearest bowl to the jack still in play that left him as the match winner and puts him through to the second round 2-1.

He will continue against the winner of the match between Paul Foster MBE or Jamie Chestney who play on Monday 20th January at 10am with the 2nd Round clash getting underway on Thursday 23rd at 3pm.
