Welsh qualifiers Damian Doubler and Dan Salmon, who finished as runners up in the 2017 final to Les Gillett and Jason Greenslade, keep their hopes alive of going one step further this time round after edging out the new seeded pairing of Simon Skelton and Rob Paxton 8-5, 6-4.
Damian and Dan held the upper hand for most of their straight sets win.
They produced a strong finish in the opening set. Trailing 4-5 after six ends, they scored four shots over the course of the last three ends to take the set.
In the second set, despite dropping a double on the first end, and Welshmen reeled off singles on each of the next six ends to forge into a 6-2 lead which left Simon and Rob requiring five shots from the remaining two ends to force a tie break.
However, it wasn’t to be with the Welsh duo addressing any vulnerable situation and cutting the count to manageable singles to continue through to the quarter finals.
That result will give them a quarter final spot tomorrow (Monday 9th Jan) – however they won’t know who their opponents will be until later this afternoon.
