WELSH QUALIFIERS DOUBLER AND SALMON WIN A THRILLER TO TAKE THE LAST SEMI FINAL SPOT

Updated: Jan 15

Seven time qualifiers for this event, Damian Doubler and Dan Salmon are making steady progress as they once again attempt to secure the World Indoor Bowls Open Pairs title for Wales.

Losing in the final 7-7, 8-6 in 2017 to Les Gillett and Jason Greenslade the Welsh boys are back in the thick of the action after securing a thrilling encounter - of the closest kind - against Irish qualifiers Matthew Crawford and Mark Foster 5-6, 6-5, 2-1.

In a high quality exchange there was nothing to separate one team from the other.

Both sets were tied at 5-5 on the penultimate end with Ireland counting the vital shot on the last end of the first set to win 6-5, while Wales rolled in a 2, 1 and 1 over the closing three ends of the second to grab a lifeline into the winner take all tie break confrontation.

Wales took first blood and then held a match lie on the second end only for Belfast man

Foster to play a perfect take out shot with his last bowl to square the match at 1-1.

Doubler though gave Salmon a good start, holding two shots that stayed in place until the end to keep their title ambitions alive.

Their glory trail will continue in tomorrow's second semi-final (Tuesday 14th January) at approx 3.45 pm.
