In their first outing, the new partnership of Rob Paxton and Jason Greenslade cemented a semi-final berth in the @Ambassador Cruise Line World Indoor Bowls Open Pairs, overcoming twice former champion Mark Dawes and former World Indoor Singles holder Jamie Walker in straight sets, 9-4, 6-5.
With two World Open Pairs titles between them - Paxton winning with Simon Skelton in 2015 and Greenslade delivering the goods in 2017 with Les Gillett, the England/Guernsey duo continue to keep their interest alive for this year's title, with both playing some amazingly accurate shots throughout their one and a half hour exchange.
Paxton and Gillett were the pacesetters in the opening set, dropping only three ends and winning 9-4 with an end to spare, with Greenslade in particular relentless, denying Dawes and Walker time and time again over their match.
The second set though was a closer affair.
The score line stood at 6-2 in favour of Paxton and Greenslade after six ends, but on the seventh end, and with three shots against him, a wonder draw bowl with his last delivery saw Greenslade dent their hopes of a comeback when he counted a single and despite dropping a single and double over the last two ends the England/Guernsey combo played out the safe options to keep the score line in their favour and move through 6-5.
They now wait for the winner of the last quarterfinal to be decided, with qualifying teams from Northern Ireland and Wales both pitting their talents against each other.
In the red corner the talented Welsh duo, seven times previous qualifiers for this event, and in the green corner Damian Double and Dan Salmon will take on Irish giant killers Matthew Crawford and Mark Foster.
Both semi-finals will be down for decision tomorrow afternoon (Tuesday 13th January) from 2pm.
