MICHAEL STEPNEY MAKES IT FIVE SEEDS FROM FIVE

Updated: Jan 16

Elgin's Michael Stepney, ranked 13= alongside Norfolk's Mervyn King, also came through his opening match of the Ambassador Cruise Line World Indoor Open Singles exchange to join Wayne Willgress, David Gourlay MBE, Rob Paxton, and Darren Burnett in the 2nd Round.

Stepney, already through to the World Open Pairs Final on Monday 20th January, met Hong Kong representative Jordi Lo from the Craigengower Cricket Club and it was another match that finished in dramatic style.

Stepney, married to Ellen, the 44 year old father of two and a joiner, continued his good pairs form in the opening set, winning 11-4.

He looked comfortable in the second set , leading 3-1, but Lo rolled in a 1, 3 and 1 to take a 6-3 lead but squandered that advantage as his Chinese opponent played a loose then, allowing the Scot to pick up a full house of 4 shots and in turn go 7-4 ahead.

Back came Lo to score a single and square the match on the penultimate end at 7-7.

On the deciding head, Stepney drew a back toucher with his opening delivery. Requiring nothing less thank scoring that vital single to take the set to a three end decider Lo, connected with the jack with his last bowl and could only agonisingly watch as the jack bounced slightly and fell to the red bowl for Stepney to win the match 8-7.

Stepney's 2nd Round opponent on Tuesday 21st January will be 2022 champion Les Gillett from England.
