LOCAL HERO MOVES THROUGH TO ROUND TWO

Updated: Jan 15

36 year old local Norfolk bowler Wayne Willgress from Wymondham gave the local spectators something to cheer about when he overcame Scotland's Darren Weir to get his first win in the bag from this year's campaign to win the Ambassador Cruise Line World Indoor Bowls Open Singles title.

Currently sitting in 12th position on the WBT Ranking List, Willgress led 7-4 playing the last end, where Weir held three shots which would have seen him tie the set. However Willgress managed to connect with Weir's outside bowl and cut one of the holding three bowls out of the head to only drop a double and take the set 7-6.

Willgress, always a passionate player who wears his heart of his sleeve, brought the crowd alive once again scoring a 3, 1, 2 and 1 to open up an 8-3 lead.

Weir rallied briefly with a single but once again the painter and decorator from the Norfolk club sealed the deal with a double on the penultimate end to put the result beyond reach and take his place in the 2nd Round of the Championship, returning on Tuesday 21st January where he will play in winner of the matches between former champion David Gourlay from Scotland or English qualifier James Rippey.
