LES CONTINUES THE SEEDED RUN

Updated: Jan 16

Number 4 seed Les Gillett maintained the unbeaten run of the seeds who have progressed to the second round of the Ambassador Cruise LineAmbassador Cruise Line World Indoor Open Singles Championship in the annual event Potters Resorts, Hopton on Sea, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.

Nottingham based Gillett, who won this title in 2022 found himself up against 25 year old Aiden Takarau , an Inward Goods Operator from Invercargill ,who was making his debut in the event after winning the New Zealand qualifier.

He put in a determined performance, but as any debutant who has secured a berth at these Championship can attest to - playing at this venue and on this single, blue portable rink is a truly unique experience. There's a lot to take in - the format, the time clock, playing on a one rink surface with the audience practically within touching distance - there's a lot to think about.

Gillett is always a tough nut to crack, a very determined and professional player and he put the young Kiwi at ease from the start, but he still performed to his usual high standard and won the match 11-4, 11-1 to set up a second round exchange against Scotland's Mike Stepney on Tuesday 21st January with a start time of 7.30pm.
