KIWI DEBUTANTS EDGE OUT SOUTH AFRICA

In the second session of play in the opening day of action in the Ambassador Cruise Line World Indoor Open Pairs Championship New Zealand's Chris Smith and skip Anthony Ouellet marched into the second round as did USA husband and wife duo Bill Brault and Anne Nunes.

The Kiwis couldn't have asked for a better start, only dropping two end in the opening set to win 10-2, but as is the way of sets play, the South African's - Christoffel Lambrechts and Fred Botha shot out of the blocks to take a 6-0 after just three ends in the second set.

The Kiwis pulled back to trail 6-5, but once again the Springbok pairing dug deep and counted on two of the last three ends to win the set 8-7 but they failed to maintain that momentum in the tie break and were counted out 2-0.

That score line leaves the New Zealanders facing a second round challenge against Scottish twosome Jason Banks and Mike Stepney tomorrow night at 7.30pm.
