DAY 1 / MATCH 3
Hong Kong’s Jason Choi skipped his Chinese counterpart Ken Chan to a tense and exciting, last bowl victory over the highly respected David Gourlay MBE and local Norfolk worthy Mervyn King in their head-to-head at the @Imagine Cruising World Indoor Bowls Pairs championship at Potters in the fourth match of the opening day at Potters.
The Scotland/England combo have taken out this title five times between them with David’s success coming alongside Alex Marshall in 2000 and then Billy Jackson in 2006 and 07, while Mervyn will look back to 2005 and then again in 2009 when he hit the jackpot with Aussie legend Kelvin Kerkow.
This match could have swung either way, with the Hong Kong duo scoring a double on the last end of the first set to tie the score at 8-8 and half the set.
In the second Jason and Ken led all the way and held a 7-4 advantage playing the last.
However, with a deftly accurate trail of the jack with his last bowl, David turned the head in his favour to hold a treble which would have been good enough to share the set again and force the match to a sudden death, best of three ends shoot out.
But as the saying goes ‘fortune favours the brave’ … and after great consideration and discussion with his partner Ken, Jason launched his last delivery, playing a perfectly timed running bowl into the head which in turn punched the jack into the ditch, to declare ‘game, set and match’ with a double to win 9-4 and move through to the second round.
Result - Ken Chan & Jason Choi (Hong Kong) beat Mervyn King (Eng) and David Gourlay MBE (Sco) 8-8, 9-4
