With the Open Pairs competition now played down to the final stage and the title being decided next week (Monday 20th January) today's action from Day 6 of the Ambassador Cruise Line World Indoor Bowls Championship will showcase five 1st Round matches in the Open Singles.
The first match to be decided saw 2020 champion Rob Paxton, from the Exonia Club in Crediton, line up against 24 year old Economics Graduate Adam McKeown from the County Antrim Club and who won the Irish qualifying event to earn the right to play in this event.
Both sets had the same defining characteristics with McKeown setting the early pace and then Paxton finishing strongly to win 8-5, 7-6.
The Irishman led 4-1 after four ends in the first set, but Paxton only dropped one of the remaining five ends and it was a similar story in the second with McKeown stretching to a 6-3 advantage after five ends and once again Paxton scoring on the remaining ends to snatch the set 7-6.
The second set was tied at 6-6 playing the last end. With shot against him, McKeown opted to run Paxton's holding shot out of the head but after hitting the intended target his own bowls ran through and knocked his own bowl out of the count and he lost the set.
Paxton continues in the 2nd Round against Scotland's Darren Burnett on Tuesday 21st January at 3pm.
