GILLETT AND WILLGRESS TAKEN TO THE WIRE BY SCOTTISH QUALIFIERS

Reigning World Indoor Singles Champion Les Gillett, who has forged a new world pairs partnership alongside local Norfolk celebrity Wayne Willgress were pushed all the way as they launched their @Imagine Cruising World Indoor Bowls Pairs campaign at the Potters Resort just a short time ago.

Standing in the way of a successful debut, the talented duo came up against the very determined father and son team of Chris and John Carswell from Ardrossan on the West Coast of Scotland who won the right to play them after beating Kiwis Colin Rogan and Garry Cotter on the opening day of the Championships.

Gillett and Willgress piled on from pressure from the opening end where they picked up a full house, and although the score line shows an 11-4 first set win, the quality of play was very high.

In the second set, the Scots came out fighting, and it a titanic display by all players the Scots pulled out some amazing shots, claiming the second set and winning 8-2 to force a sudden death shoot out.

Gillett drew two shots to within inches of the jack that stayed in place to take the first count.

In the second, it was the turn of the Scots to hold the upper hand, but a sizzling forehand runner to a full-length jack saw Willgress run the jack to the ditch for ‘game, set and match’ and to deny the Scots the opportunity of a third end decider.

The last four remaining quarter final Pairs berths will be up for grabs tomorrow, with defending champions Stewart Anderson and Darren Burnett opening the third day of action as they begin their quest to retain the title.

Also, in action will be five times winners Paul Foster MBE and Alex Marshall MBE and previous holders Nicky Brett and Greg Harlow. Rob Paxton and Simon Skelton are also a new partnership and figure in the second match at 11.15 am.

Match result - Les Gillett & Wayne Willgress (Eng) beat Chris Carswell & John Carswell (Sco) 11-4, 2-7, 2-1
