FANTASTIC MATCH SEES CHAMPION THROUGH

Ambassador Cruise Line World Indoor Bowls Championships

Potters Resorts (10th/26th January 2025)

22nd January (Day 13 / World Open Singles Round 2 Cont'd

Defending champion Stewart Anderson survived a tough encounter against multi-decorated England international star Sam Tolchard, to register a last eight place in the Ambassador Cruise Line World Open Singles Championship lineup on Friday morning (24th January) against his good friend, and Ayrshire rival David Gourlay MBE.

It was an eagerly awaited meeting with Tolchard, who was making his second appearance in the Open Singles. He lost in his first visit in 2023 to Scotland's Michael Stepney 2-1 on a tie-break, and made a return appearance this year, having won through from the Bromley qualifier.

The expected quality exchange was never in doubt with both players highly respected around the globe, and they produced the game that everyone wanted to see, displaying a wide range of shots before Anderson got over the finishing line 7-7, 9-4 to win by one and a half set to a half.

A double on the seventh end gave Anderson a 7-4 cushion, but on the eighth end, holding a set lie, Tolchard got an outrageous fluke from his own off-target bowl. Playing to a displaced jack, Tolchard was as amazed as his opposition when the dust settled, and he held the shot that gave him a lifeline to stay alive in the set, and he capitalised with a double on the last to share the set at 7-7.

Unperturbed, three-time winner and defending champion Anderson marched on, opening a 4-0 lead after four ends, only for Tolchard to level the score three ends later at 4-4.

However, Anderson regrouped, scoring a single and consecutive twos to take his place in the quarter-finals.
