EXPERIENCE COUNTS AS KING AND GOURLAY BAG SEMI FINAL PLACE

Updated: Jan 15

The England/Scotland long time partnership of Mervyn King and David Gourlay claimed the second semi-final slot in the Ambassador Cruise Line World Indoor Bowls Open Pairs Championship, ending the hopes of popular Hong Kong duo Po Ting Hei and Jason Choi after a tie break.

Hitting form from the off, King and Gourlay only dropped one end in the opening set, putting the result beyond doubt at 10-1 with an end to spare.

In the second though the young Hong Kong Chinese duo strung together the first three ends to take a 4-0 lead, and despite each pair scoring on three ends each over the remaining six, it was Po Ting Hei and Jason Choi who played the big bowls over the last two end, counting doubles to win the set 9-4 and force a tie break.

However they couldn't shake off a determined effort from King and Gourlay who sealed the verdict 2-0.

King and Gourlay have never won this title as a team, but both have celebrated the title on three occasions each. King - once with Tony Allcock in 1997 and twice with Kelvin Kerkow in 2005 and '09, while Gourlay tasted success with Alex Marshall back in 2000 and was a back to back winner with Billy Jackson 2006 and '07.

Standing between them and a place in the final are Scotland's Jason Banks and Mike Stepney. They are poised to battle out their semi-final tomorrow (Tuesday 14th January) at 2pm with the winner moving through to the title decider on Monday 20th January at 1pm which will be shown LIVE on BBC.
