DAWES STAGES A STRONG FINISH TO TAKE THE UK OPEN TITLE

Mark Dawes dug deep in the closing stages of both sets to get the better of English team mate Jamie Chestney to lift the inaugural Garage-Roofs.com UK Open title at Stanley.

Little separated the players in the opening set but singles on each of the last two gave Mark the set 7-5.

In the second set Jamie played some amazingly delicate precision shots over the opening exchanges jumping out to a 7-2 lead at 6 ends and looked like taking the match to a tie break.

However with shots against him, Mark hit the 6th end head and the jack rolled right to the rink marker pin and he held a treble a good distance from the jack.

Trying to draw in and cut the count, Jamie admitted to ‘making a mistake’ – miscalculated and his last bowl just slowly dropped into the ditch, giving Mark a lifeline back into the set, and with that boost behind him he rolled in a single and double to take out the title 8-7.

On his way to the title Mark crossed off 4 Scottish contenders …. qualifier John Fleming Jnr, Mike Stepney, Darren Burnett and Paul Foster MBE .
