DAVID GOURLAY TAKES THE THIRD OF THE QUARTER FINAL SPOTS IN THE WORLD INDOOR SINGLES

Scotland’s David Gourlay, who last won this title at Preston Guild Hall back in 1996 against fellow Scot Hugh Duff, pulled off a last 8-7, 5-10, 2-0 win over former winner Nick Brett in the last match of Day 12 at Potters last night.

Both players utilised a steady draw game which wasn’t very adventurous with Gourlay taking the opening set with a single on the last end to win 8-7.

The second set was again a steadily contested, but back to back doubles over the closing stages gave Nicky a lifeline back into the game at 10-5, but it was the Scot who ran out the winner counting the first two ends of the tie break to progress to a quarter final match against former champion Mark Dawes on Friday (20th January).

Match Result -

David Gourlay MBE (Scot /13) bt Nick Brett (Eng/4) 8-7, 5-10, 2-0
