DARREN BURNETT TURNS IN A VINTAGE DISPLAY AGAINST AUSSIE QUALIFIER BLAKE NAIRN

Updated: Jan 16

As he began his Ambassador Cruise Line World Indoor Bowls challenge 48 year old Bowls Administrator Darren Burnett from Arbroath in Scotland, rolled back the years with a vintage display - particularly in the second set, to end the hopes of Australian qualifier Blake Nairn - a 32 year old store person from Gosnells, Western Australia, 8-7, 10-1.

It's been eleven years since Burnett, now ranked 12 on the WBT Ranking List, picked up the title - beating Nicky Brett 7-10, 8-7, 2-1, and he was bang on form in his opening game with heavy hitter Nairn pushed into playing a succession of running shots in the opening set that kept him in the game.

Tied at 7-7 playing the last, with Burnett holding a treble, Nairn thundered his last bowl down the rink, but when the dust settled, it was Burnett who got the thumbs up to score that vital set winning single 8-7.

He carried his relentless form into the second set, powering his way throughout to win 10-1 and march into a second round clash against former champion Rob Paxton on Tuesday 21st January at approx 3pm.
