CHAMPION MOVES INTO ROUND TWO IN STYLE

Defending champion Stewart Anderson safely negotiated his opening match of the Ambassador Cruise Line World Indoor Bowls Open Singles Championships and now moves through to Round 2 after his 13-1, 12-5 victory over Israel's Daniel Alonim.

Alonim, a Landscaping consultant who plays bowls at the Ra'nana club, qualified once again for the Championships from the PBA Israel. This is his fifth time representing Israel in a WBT event, making three previous appearances at the Scottish International Open and originally debuting at this venue in the Open Pairs in 2013.

On the way to his Round 1 match against Anderson, he had to hold off challenges from Canadian Josh Cameron and then Ronald Lising, the Phillipines player representing new PBA Member country Thailand, before lining up against the world-ranked number 1 from Cumnock in Ayrshire.

It took him a while to settle into his game, dropping the opening set 13-1. In the second set he figured well, trailing by just 5-3 after four ends. He did score a further double, but it was too little too late and the result went Anderson's way two sets to nil after wrapping up a 12-5 win in the set.

His second-round opponent on Wednesday 22nd January at 1pm will be England international Sam Tolchard.

During the championships, Daniel had to return home following the death of his mother. In challenging circumstances, he returned to Potters Resorts in the early hours of Sunday morning. The whole of World Bowls Tour extends their thoughts to Daniel and his family at this sad time.
